The word “Rei” means universal and “Ki” means life energy. Reiki healing is characterized by its emphasis on channeling universal (Rei) life force energy (Ki) through the practitioner's hands and a focus on the recipient’s inherent ability to heal. While other energy healing techniques may involve more active direction or manipulation of energy, Reiki is about allowing the energy to flow through the practitioner where it is needed by the recipient.

There are many kinds of energy healing- all healing energy has Ki and all energy healers use Ki. Reiki is different from other energy healing practices because practitioners first need to be attuned to it. Reiki is guided by the higher universal consciousness and wisdom that is connected to all living beings. This higher universal consciousness understands each person, the cause of all problems and knows how to heal them.

Life energy plays an important role in everything we do. While we have life energy while we are alive, this flow of energy can become low or restricted. When this happens, we are more vulnerable to illness. When life energy is high and flowing freely, you are less likely to get sick. During a Reiki session, the practitioner acts as a conduit of this universal wisdom and life energy. The receiver uses the innate wisdom of their body and inherent ability to heal to use the energy they receive where it is needed.

People who already do healing work report a consistent increase of at least 50 percent in the strength of their healing energies after taking Reiki training. The Reiki attunement is a powerful spiritual experience for most people. Many report having mystical experiences involving personal messages, healings, visions and past-life experiences. The attunement can also increase psychic sensitivity. Students often report an opening of the third eye, increased intuitive awareness or other psychic experiences after receiving a Reiki attunement. Once you have received a Reiki attunement, you will have Reiki for the remainder of your life. It does not wear off and you can never lose it.
